Reading Comprehension Strategies that Work |
|
Some of the reviews that reach similar conclusions are referenced in the bibliography. While there have been several assessments of the studies on reading comprehension instruction, none of the reviewers, however, including the NRP text comprehension reviewers, have produced a thorough scientific analysis of the complete literature. The NRP text comprehension review, for instance, applied NRP criteria to the studies but accepted the conclusions of the original study authors on face value. Two reviews by Barak Rosenshine and his colleagues at the University of Illinois in Urbana applied a more demanding quantitative analysis but were limited to the literature on individual instruction categories of Question Generation and Multiple Strategy. When Rosenshine and his colleagues reexamined the original authors results, they produced the strongest evidence thus far outlining the benefits of comprehension strategy instructions.
More rigorous studies and reviews will better pinpoint when various strategies can be best applied and with what students.
